New York 2010
Heather and I had an incredible trip across the country this past week. I have never been in a city like New York before, especially not on my own. The first few days Heather was working with Redken taking a class by some uppy-up named Noah Hatton leaving poor Amber (me) to fend for myself. Okay, don’t laugh…It took me TWO days to venture further than the Borders book store one block from the Roosevelt Hotel where we were staying. Alright…alright…I can already hear you laughing. But, in my defense the first day I saw some poor pedestrian get pummeled by a car! It didn’t matter how bored or hungry–I was too scared to go anywhere. Luckily, by the third day I was feeling much more brave : )
What’s New York without the pigeons?
Yay! Skyscrapers. We just don’t have those things in Spokanada.
Time Square (three blocks from our hotel!!)
That crazy red-headed photog
I love the impromptu and uninhibited joy I caught on Heather’s face after we bought our first street cart hotdogs *LOL*

On Becoming a Redken Model for a Day
Alright…if you ever thought being a model was easy you’ve got another thing coming! On Tuesday night my sweet friend Heather thought she would “let me know” that they were short a few models for Wednesday’s shoot with Maestro Lucian and she volunteered me. First thoughts through my head:
I don’t know HOW to be a model
I am only 5’5″–these girls will all be at least 5’9″
And then with a little resolution I though: Well, I guess I’ll be wearing my black stilettos….. all day….
I was so nervous it must have been hilarious. I tried to eat breakfast but though: I’ll bet real models don’t eat breakfast. And of course the photographer hardly spoke English! I was set to have my photos taken after this beautiful six-foot-tall Russian beauty. To make it worse, she just so happened to look completely at ease in the tiny piece of lingerie she had on. She walks right up to the middle of the lights and *bam* bam *bam* Perfect poses every time. I start to shake…. Oh gosh what did I get myself into?
I walk the plank……
……and……freeze. EEk!
I don’t know what to do. My head is screaming. My heart is racing. My palms are dripping….Everyone is looking at me. I suck big time and I know it!! Lucian stomps at me! Ugh….kill me now….
Somehow I make it through the first set but I am sure I completely ruined it. With the second set I manage to loosen up enough to do a little better. Still, I feel very sorry for the poor assistant who has to muddle through my pictures and try to find something–anything worth keeping. Double Ugh. I don’t have any pictures from this terrifying experience other than a few Heather was able to take on her cell phone:

Creative Session Work
We couldn’t be in New York and not do at least one creative session. Our goal with this set was not to do the same style of photography and styling of our last modeling shoots. Rather, we wanted these pictures to have a more organic feel and focus on the city.
Thank you Jessica for being brave enough to meet two strangers in a hotel room and enduring the freezing weather for us to get these shots.

American Salon Magazine Shoot
The staff of Redken and American Salon Magazine were so awesome to let me come and be a part of their shoot at the Daylight Room Studio in downtown New York. I loved watching the photographer Babak work his magic. The room had amazing natural light which Babak paired with studio strobes and a gigantic light diffuser. He was so sweet to everyone and you could tell he is a favorite among the hairstylists and magazine editors.
The Willamina Models were two of the neatest girls! The one on the right just had a baby about a month ago and you might recognize Alexa (left) from recent Abercrombie Ads.
Stephanie is one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever met (inside and out). I am so excited for you move to New York Steph! Take care and many blessings as you go. XOXO~
And One More For The Road…

I’m pretty sure my exact words were “I’m so HAPPY!!!” in that hotdog picture!!
I love love love this post, Amber… Way to capture the magic!!
